Here Come Those Amazing Colors Again

Fall is a special time in upstate New York. It’s a time of harvest and also of vibrant foliage. It’s a particularly special time for the senses in Corning & the Finger Lakes as you can savor the many flavors of local harvest at roadside stands and farmer’s markets and experience exquisite award-winning wines while also feasting your eyes on the spectacular views of rolling hillsides patched with small farms, ripe vineyards, and a cornucopia of trees decked out in golds and reds and ambers and purples, all juxtaposed against pristine Keuka Lake.

Travel the back roads in one of the country’s most scenic regions, where wildflowers grow along the side of the road and cows graze in the pasture. Discover small towns where white church spires rise above the tree tops and American flags wave proudly in the breeze; quaint towns where Mom & Pop businesses are common and where people wave at passersby.

Whether it’s a panoramic view from one of the wineries that surround Keuka Lake or it’s along the scenic byways that connect one small town to another, one beautiful state park to another, there’s plenty of incredible foliage to be enjoy each fall.

I never realized as a kid growing up in the area that people actually plan trips around foliage. At the time, it was just one of those natural changes that signified the passing of the seasons that I guess we often take for granted. As an adult, especially someone who can’t get enough of the great outdoors, I fully appreciate just how special the many-colored hillsides are. Back when Trivial Pursuit first came out, I prided myself on being good at knowing the answers. It’s frightening just how much one can lose track of over the years in that cavern we call a skull. But, even back when I was in training for Trivial Pursuit Stardom, I never realized one of the questions was inspired by an annual event that takes place right here in Corning & the Finger Lakes, an event that will be taking place again October1-3 in Cohocton.

The Cohocton Fall Foliage Festival draws people from all over North America. People come for the colorful trees, the colorful people, the sundry fun activities, the food, and the Trivial Pursuit recognized tree sitting contest. It's the perfect blend of small-town charm, an abundance of natural beauty, and a variety of fun things to do.
